The Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Sordar Md. Sakhawat Hossain, has appealed to private healthcare institutions to introduce an 80 per cent discount on diagnostic testing for patients suffering from dengue. This measure aims to substantially alleviate the financial burden associated with medical treatment in the private sector.
The announcement was made by the Health Minister on Tuesday afternoon during a press briefing at the Bangladesh Secretariat. The briefing followed a formal session on dengue prevention, clinical management, and healthcare guidelines held in the conference room of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Minister Sakhawat Hossain urged private hospital administrators to implement special financial concessions for dengue management. He stated that the ministry has initiated dialogue with private hospital representatives to negotiate a structured reduction in treatment costs across the country.
Providing a specific breakdown of the financial relief model, the Health Minister explained that diagnostic procedures should be subject to price reductions of up to 80 per cent. By way of example, he noted that under this framework, if a patient incurs a diagnostic bill of 10,000 Taka, a discount of up to 8,000 Taka is currently being actively considered by the authorities.
The table below illustrates how the 80 per cent concession framework would alter patient billing for diagnostic tests at private medical facilities:
| Total Diagnostic Cost (BDT) | Government Recommended Discount | Concession Value (BDT) | Net Payable Amount by Patient (BDT) |
| 10,000 | 80% | 8,000 | 2,000 |
The high-level meeting convened by the ministry addressed several critical operational facets of the national response to the dengue outbreak:
Financial Relief: Restructuring private healthcare fees to prevent exorbitant out-of-pocket spending by citizens during medical emergencies.
Standardised Clinical Guidelines: Ensuring that both public and private hospitals strictly adhere to official medical protocols for treating dengue infections.
Institutional Dialogue: Maintaining continuous communication between the Ministry of Health and private sector stakeholders to oversee the implementation of the proposed concessions.
