HSBC Reveals Top Bangladeshi Export Champions — One Tech Firm Shocks Everyone!

Published: 08 Dec 2025, 09:13 am

Bangladesh’s export achievements received significant global recognition on Sunday as four distinguished industrial enterprises were presented with the HSBC Export Excellence Awards. The ceremony, hosted at Dhaka’s Radisson Blu Hotel, marked the ninth edition of the awards recognising outstanding exporters that have strengthened Bangladesh’s global economic footprint while promoting sustainability and innovation.

Awards were presented across four key categories, each honouring organisations that achieved exceptional export revenues and demonstrated forward-thinking practices. Within the apparel sector, Flamingo Fashions—part of the renowned DBL Group—secured the top award for enterprises exporting goods worth over 100 million US dollars annually. NZ Tex Group, known for supplying high-quality yarn and fabric to major international brands, was honoured for achieving annual export earnings exceeding 50 million US dollars.

In the emerging and non-traditional export segment, two companies from AkijBashir Group—Janata Jute Mills and Sadat Jute Industries—received recognition for generating export incomes surpassing 10 million US dollars. The two companies have pioneered diversification in jute products, stepping away from conventional items to deliver premium, value-added jute-based materials to more than 90 countries.

In the fast-expanding service export category, UlkaSemi Private Limited stood out as the sole winner. Based in Dhaka, UlkaSemi specialises in advanced semiconductor design, catering to some of the world’s largest technology hubs including the United States, China, Taiwan and India. With a target of 5 million US dollars in annual export revenue, the company represents Bangladesh’s growing presence in the global tech ecosystem.

Comprehensive presentations were delivered during the ceremony, highlighting the impact of each award-winning organisation. Flamingo Fashions was recognised not only for its scale—operating 118 production lines and exporting approximately 44 million garments annually—but also for its sustainability initiatives. The company has achieved significant self-reliance by sourcing 60 per cent of its raw materials internally and implementing renewable energy and water-recycling programmes.

NZ Tex Group continues to cement Bangladesh’s reputation in the international apparel supply chain by producing an estimated 52,000 tonnes of yarn annually. Its output aligns with the demand of global fashion houses, making it one of the textile sector’s most important contributors.

The achievements of Janata Jute Mills and Sadat Jute Industries mark a notable shift in the jute industry. Their ability to diversify and innovate has allowed them to expand into lucrative, modern product categories, strengthening Bangladesh’s position in the global jute market.

UlkaSemi’s award reflects the transformation taking place in Bangladesh’s technology sector. Its advanced semiconductor design solutions place the country on a competitive global map, demonstrating the sophistication and future potential of its tech workforce.

The ceremony brought together leading policymakers, financiers and diplomats. Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin praised the resilience and adaptability of Bangladeshi entrepreneurs, reaffirming government support. Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur urged exporters to adopt greater product diversification to maximise opportunities in an evolving global market. HSBC Bangladesh CEO Md Mahbub ur Rahman stressed the importance of strengthening trade diplomacy and identifying competitive export destinations to expand the national export base.

British High Commissioner Sarah Cook described the United Kingdom as a long-standing and trusted partner in Bangladesh’s economic journey, noting continued collaboration in sectors such as fashion, energy and education.

Entrepreneurs in attendance also highlighted challenges facing the business community. Ha-Meem Group’s Managing Director AK Azad warned about false legal cases against businesspersons, calling it a disturbing trend. Abdul Hai Sarkar, Chairman of the Bangladesh Association of Banks, stated that a national election would help resolve many obstacles, emphasising that the business community eagerly awaits political stability.
