Authorities in Iran have announced the arrest of twenty individuals in the country’s north-western region on allegations of attempting to transmit sensitive information to Israel. The detentions were confirmed in an official statement issued by the prosecutor’s office in West Azerbaijan Province, according to reports carried by the Iranian semi-official news agency Tasnim.

Prosecutors alleged that the detained individuals were involved in networks attempting to gather and transfer classified details about Iranian military and security installations. According to the statement, the suspects had reportedly sought to pass information regarding the locations of military facilities, law-enforcement infrastructure, and other security-related sites to Israeli contacts.

Iranian officials characterised the alleged groups as “mercenary networks” connected to what they described as the Israeli occupying regime. The prosecutor’s office further stated that the suspects had been operating covertly to supply intelligence that could potentially assist hostile activities against the country’s strategic assets.

Authorities said the arrests were carried out following a judicial order and formed part of a broader effort to identify and dismantle espionage networks believed to be operating within Iranian territory. Security agencies reportedly conducted coordinated operations to locate the suspects and seize related evidence.

The province where the arrests occurred lies along Iran’s border with Turkey and Iraq and is regarded as a strategically sensitive area due to its proximity to key transit routes and security installations. Iranian officials have frequently warned about the presence of foreign intelligence networks seeking to exploit border regions to conduct surveillance and recruitment.

The development follows heightened tensions between Iran and Israel in recent months. A report published last week by the international news agency Reuters suggested that Israeli operations inside Iran had entered what analysts described as a new phase. According to the report, Israeli actions were allegedly guided by intelligence provided by informants within Iran.

Those operations were said to target strategic locations including security checkpoints and facilities considered important to Iran’s defence and internal security infrastructure. Iranian officials have repeatedly accused Israel of conducting covert intelligence activities inside the country, including sabotage and targeted strikes.

While Tehran has not released detailed identities of the detainees, authorities indicated that investigations are continuing and further arrests could follow if additional connections are uncovered.

Iranian authorities emphasised that the country’s intelligence and judicial institutions remain vigilant against what they describe as foreign espionage efforts. Officials also warned that anyone found cooperating with hostile intelligence networks would face prosecution under national security laws.

The case underscores the persistent shadow conflict between Iran and Israel, which often unfolds through intelligence operations, cyber activities, and covert actions rather than open confrontation. Analysts say such arrests reflect Tehran’s determination to demonstrate control over internal security while signalling its readiness to counter perceived external threats.
