Despite escalating conflict across parts of the Middle East and calls to postpone the fixture, Iraq’s national football team is preparing to travel to Mexico to compete in a crucial intercontinental play-off for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Iraqi Football Association has confirmed that the national squad will depart later this week on a specially arranged charter flight in order to fulfil its international commitment.

Association president Adnan Dirjal announced the decision in an official statement, explaining that extraordinary logistical measures are being taken to ensure the team’s safe journey. Air travel across the region has been disrupted due to the ongoing conflict, forcing the federation to coordinate closely with international football authorities and aviation officials.

Dirjal noted that the association has also been working with clubs abroad to facilitate the release and travel arrangements of Iraqi players currently competing in foreign leagues. Several key members of the national team play professionally in Europe and Asia, making travel coordination more complex under the current circumstances.

The decisive play-off match is scheduled to take place on 31 March in Monterrey, Mexico. Iraq will face the winner of the semi-final between Bolivia and Suriname. Victory in this match would move Iraq a step closer to securing a place at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Regional tensions have intensified since a wave of military strikes involving the United States and Israel on 28 February triggered broader instability in the Middle East. The conflict has affected several sectors, including international sport, with travel restrictions and safety concerns complicating participation for teams in the region.

The uncertain environment has also raised questions about the participation of other Middle Eastern nations in upcoming international tournaments. Iran’s potential involvement in the World Cup has drawn particular attention. Former United States president Donald Trump recently warned that the “life and security” of Iran’s national team could be at risk should they travel to the United States for matches. However, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has insisted that Iran would be welcomed as a participant in the global competition, emphasising football’s role as a unifying sport beyond political tensions.

Iraq’s own preparations have not been without difficulty. Head coach Graham Arnold previously called for the match to be postponed due to travel complications and safety concerns. According to Arnold, several members of the squad and coaching staff have been stranded in different Middle Eastern countries as a result of the ongoing conflict and restricted flight routes.

Despite these challenges, Iraqi football officials remain determined to participate. For many supporters, the team’s journey represents more than a sporting contest; it symbolises resilience and national pride during a time of regional instability.

Below is a summary of key details regarding the upcoming play-off stage:
