Potential Changes in Bangladesh’s Unofficial Final Lineup

The ongoing One Day International (ODI) series between Bangladesh and Pakistan has reached a decisive juncture. Bangladesh claimed victory in the first match, but Pakistan comfortably dominated the second, leaving the series hanging in the balance. The third and final match has effectively assumed the character of an unofficial final, where both teams will vie to assert supremacy.

Bangladesh’s heavy defeat in the second ODI has cast a shadow over the team’s strategy. The management had intended to test the squad’s ability to chase large totals, but once again the experiment fell short, exposing vulnerabilities in the batting order. As a result, questions loom over whether Bangladesh will adopt a cautious approach to secure the series or once more risk a high-stakes chase.

A key point of discussion ahead of the final match centres on the opening pair. In the first two ODIs, Bangladesh relied on Tanvir Hasan Tamim and Saif Hassan to provide a solid start. While Tamim contributed in the first game, his second match performance was underwhelming, and Saif failed to make a notable impact in either game.

This opens the door for Soumya Sarkar, who had been omitted from the opening pair in the first two matches. Sarkar delivered a match-winning 91 in the final game against the West Indies in the preceding series, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. He is now a strong contender to return to the XI.

Selection scenarios indicate that either Tamim or Saif could be replaced to accommodate Sarkar. Saif’s poor form—scoring just 4 off 10 balls and 12 off 12 in the two ODIs—makes him the likely candidate to sit out. Alternatively, Tamim might be rested to create a right-left combination with Sarkar, adding tactical flexibility at the top of the order.

The bowling unit could also see adjustments. There is speculation that one of the fast bowlers may be given a rest, paving the way for Shariful Islam to re-enter the lineup. This could necessitate the exclusion of Taskin Ahmed, Nahid Rana, or Mustafizur Rahman, depending on the combination chosen.

The table below summarises Bangladesh’s probable lineup for the final match:

PositionProbable Player(s)

All-rounderAfif Hossain

Bangladesh’s team management will need to strike a careful balance between form, experience, and strategic advantage. The upcoming match will not only decide the series winner but could also determine the confidence and momentum of the squad ahead of future international fixtures.
