Two men have been arrested within 24 hours in connection with the recovery of a decapitated body in the Nesarabad upazila of Pirojpur district, according to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The arrests were made during separate operations conducted in Barishal on Saturday.
RAB officials stated that investigators analysed closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the vicinity of the crime scene, which proved crucial in identifying the suspects. The footage showed three individuals entering a brick kiln premises on a motorcycle. After a short period, however, only two men were seen leaving the site. Through subsequent investigation, the three individuals were identified as Gopal Chandra Das, the victim, and two suspects—Samrat (34) and Abedin Majhi (42), also known as Raju.
Following the analysis of the footage and further intelligence-based surveillance, members of RAB carried out a series of targeted operations. At around midday on Saturday, Samrat was detained from the Gonpara area of Kashipur Chowmatha under the Airport Police Station in Barishal. Later the same evening, Abedin Majhi alias Raju was apprehended from the Steamer Ghat area under Kotwali Police Station in the city.
During preliminary interrogation, investigators learned that the suspects had allegedly lured Gopal Chandra Das to the brick kiln on a motorcycle. Authorities believe the killing stemmed from a long-standing personal feud. According to the initial account provided by the suspects, the victim was attacked and killed at the brick kiln before his head was severed with a sharp weapon. The perpetrators then reportedly disposed of the severed head by throwing it into a nearby river in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime and hinder identification.
Law enforcement personnel also recovered several pieces of evidence believed to have been used during the murder. These include a hammer and the motorcycle used to transport the victim to the scene.
The two suspects have since been handed over to Nesarabad Police Station, where a formal murder case has been filed. Police officials confirmed that further interrogation and investigation are underway to determine whether additional individuals were involved in the crime and to recover the missing body parts.
The gruesome incident first came to light on Friday (13 March) at approximately 5:30 pm. Local residents discovered the headless body lying on the bank of the Sandhya River, just south of Mamun Molla’s brick kiln in the East Sarengakathi village of Samudaykathi Union in Nesarabad upazila.
Authorities say the discovery sparked alarm among local residents, prompting a swift response from law enforcement agencies. The body was later sent for post-mortem examination, while investigators began gathering evidence from the site.
