US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has claimed that the conflict involving Iran could reach its conclusion within weeks, asserting that Washington is inflicting severe and potentially irreversible damage on Tehran’s naval and defence-industrial capabilities.
In an interview with ABC News on Monday (31 March), Rubio stated that US operations had already dismantled a significant portion of Iran’s naval infrastructure and missile launch systems. He further argued that Iran’s defence production capacity was being systematically degraded to the point where it would be unable to rebuild its missile or drone arsenal in the foreseeable future.
According to Rubio, Iran is now at its “weakest point in modern history”, and continued US pressure is aimed at preventing any rapid military recovery. He warned that allowing Tehran to expand its missile stockpile over the next two years would create what he described as an “unacceptable strategic risk” to regional and global security.
A central focus of Washington’s stance remains the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints. Rubio emphasised that any attempt by Iran to assert control or impose toll-like restrictions over the waterway would not be tolerated. He indicated that the US Department of Defence would take all necessary steps to ensure uninterrupted maritime navigation through the strait.
Iran, however, has rejected these assertions. Speaking at a press briefing in Tehran on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that no direct negotiations are currently taking place between Tehran and Washington. He added that while intermediaries have conveyed messages from the United States, Iran remains deeply sceptical of American intentions and the credibility of its diplomatic commitments.
Earlier reports, including from international financial media, suggested that indirect talks facilitated by third parties—potentially involving regional intermediaries—had made limited but constructive progress. However, Iran has denied participating in any recent multilateral discussions reportedly held in Islamabad involving Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Egypt.
Tensions have further escalated amid repeated warnings from US political leadership regarding potential military action. President Donald Trump has reportedly suggested that failure to reach a rapid agreement or reopen the Strait of Hormuz to unrestricted commerce could result in strikes targeting Iranian energy infrastructure, including oil fields and key installations.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategically sensitive waterways in the world. Any disruption to shipping through the strait would likely trigger immediate global economic repercussions, particularly in energy markets.
As the confrontation between US-aligned forces and Iran continues into its second month, concerns are mounting over broader regional stability. Analysts warn that escalating rhetoric and military posturing on both sides risk drawing the wider Middle East into a deeper and more prolonged crisis, with significant implications for global energy security and economic stability.
