A student political leader in Mymensingh has been temporarily relieved of his organizational duties following the widespread circulation of a video showing him consuming illegal substances. Jahirul Islam, Vice-President of the Mymensingh North District unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Joint Convenor of Gouripur Upazila unit, was suspended after the footage went viral across social media platforms, sparking intense criticism within local political circles.
The official suspension notice was issued late on Friday, 16 October 2026, signed by Md. Saddam Hossain Talukder, Office Secretary of the Mymensingh North District Chhatra Dal. Islam, the son of Abul Kashem, hails from Dhopa Jangalia village in the Sahanati Union under Gouripur Upazila. He had been actively involved in regional student politics, holding dual leadership posts across both upazila and district committees.
The controversy erupted after a short video clip surfaced online depicting Islam consuming a drug-like substance. As the video circulated widely among local residents and social media users, district leaders took immediate notice of the breach of organizational discipline and morals.
Efforts to reach Islam via telephone for a comment were unsuccessful, as he repeatedly failed to answer calls. However, party insiders indicated that he informally asserted his innocence, alleging that the footage was fabricated or manipulated, and expressed an intention to pursue legal remedies to clear his name.
Nuruzzaman Sohel, President of the Mymensingh North District Chhatra Dal, confirmed the disciplinary action, stating that the leadership received the video footage showing Islam consuming a substance resembling drugs. Sohel explained that the decision to temporarily suspend Islam was made on the basis of preliminary findings to uphold party discipline and organizational integrity. He added that district executives are conducting a thorough investigation to verify the authenticity of the video clip and the underlying allegations. Should the investigation confirm the charges, the student wing will initiate further formal organizational measures, including permanent expulsion.
