A musical event, Jolsarat, recently took place in Sydney, Australia, attracting participation from the Bengali-speaking diaspora. Organised by Novera, the programme began at 7 pm last Saturday at the Harold Corr Community Hall, offering a culturally rich evening for the expatriate community.
The event was a blend of old classics and contemporary Bengali music, featuring modern songs, ghazals, Lalon songs, and popular 1990s band performances. Attendees were transported to different eras through the melodies, enjoying the performances attentively.
The first segment was hosted by Pushpita Chowdhury, with performances by Sudipa Ghosh, Preeti Roy, and Shyamali Debray, whose songs resonated deeply with the audience. The second segment featured the Splash Music Group, including Piyush Sarkar, Suman Roy, Logan Pal, and Shaon Sarkar. Their renditions of 1990s popular band music generated excitement, with many audience members singing along.
After the event, attendees expressed that amid their busy expatriate lives, such programmes reconnect them with Bengali culture. The organisers stated that encouraged by the community’s response, they plan to host larger cultural events in the future and aim to establish a regular initiative for cultural exchange among expatriate artists and audiences.
