Labuschagne: Australia’s Day-Night Experience Could Be Crucial in Ashes Second Test

Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne believes the team’s extensive experience in day-night cricket gives them a clear edge as they prepare for the second Ashes Test on Thursday, where England will use a pink ball for the first time in nearly three years.

Australia has hosted more day-night Tests than any other country combined and has also run multiple Sheffield Shield fixtures under lights with a pink ball, initially between 2013 and 2018 and again during the past two seasons. Ben Oliver, Cricket Australia’s head of national teams, explained that these matches aim to enhance domestic players’ experience and ensure they are ready for the demands of international cricket.

Labuschagne, while admitting he traditionally prefers a red ball, noted that Australia has become adept at reading the nuances of pink-ball cricket. “The pink ball changes how you play. We’ve learned over time how to navigate different moments of the game,” he said.

He also praised Mitchell Starc, the world’s leading pink-ball swing bowler. “His left-handed high pace combined with late swing makes him a nightmare for batters, especially in the right conditions,” Labuschagne said.

Labuschagne’s average in day-night Tests is an impressive 63.86, 38% higher than his overall career average. “The pink ball behaves differently depending on the time of day, and successful teams adapt to those shifts. There are periods of lull and periods of intensity, and managing them effectively is key,” he added.

Recounting a partnership with Nathan McSweeney against India in Adelaide, Labuschagne highlighted the importance of capitalising on night sessions to gain momentum. On batting orders, he argued that while flexibility matters, it is ultimately the ability to score runs that counts.
