Madarganj Police Detain Two Chhatra League Leaders

Police detained two Chhatra League leaders during a human chain organised in Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur to protest the killing of a child named Mariyam, as well as alleged rape, drug-related activities and child abuse in the area.

The incident took place on Thursday (17 September) afternoon in the Gajaria village area of Adarvita Union. The protest was held near Bajiter Para Bazar, where local residents gathered under the banner of a social organisation called ‘Jubo Samaj’.

The two detainees have been identified as Dipu Hasan, organisational secretary of Adarvita Union Chhatra League and son of Sohrab Ali of Gajaria village, and Miraj, a Chhatra League member and son of Abdus Salam of the same village.

According to local residents, the human chain was organised in response to growing concerns over incidents affecting children and public safety in the locality. Participants protested the killing of child Mariyam last week and raised demands for action against rape, drug-related activities and violence against children.

Residents said a number of local people joined the programme. The protesters called for justice over Mariyam’s killing and urged the authorities to take measures to improve security in the area and prevent crimes involving women and children.

Police were present at the scene during the programme. At one stage, Dipu Hasan and Miraj were detained from the gathering.

Madarganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Snehashish Ray said a procession had been organised under the leadership of Chhatra League demanding justice for Mariyam’s killing. He said slogans including ‘Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu’ were raised during the procession, after which the two individuals were detained.

The police officer also said additional police personnel had been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. The deployment was aimed at preventing any deterioration of the local situation following the incident.

The detention took place against the backdrop of public concern over Mariyam’s death and other alleged crimes raised during the protest. Local residents participating in the human chain said they wanted the authorities to ensure accountability and strengthen protection for children in the community.

However, the available information does not specify what charges, if any, have been formally brought against Dipu Hasan and Miraj. It was also not immediately clear whether a case had been filed against them following their detention.

Police said they were maintaining a presence in the area to ensure public order. Further details regarding the legal status of the two detainees were not immediately available.
