Cloudflare, the technology company widely recognised for managing internet traffic and providing security services for millions of websites, experienced a significant global network failure that disrupted online platforms across numerous countries. The outage, which struck without prior warning, temporarily knocked offline an estimated 20 per cent of the world’s websites, highlighting the scale of global dependence on Cloudflare’s infrastructure.
According to the outage-monitoring service DownDetector, the incident caused widespread interruptions to several major online platforms. Users around the world reported difficulties accessing services such as X (formerly Twitter), ChatGPT, the game League of Legends, Spotify, Canva, Grindr, and Amazon. The ripple effect was felt across Asia as well, where, at around 5:30pm Bangladesh time, a large number of Bangladeshi news portals and other websites became inaccessible. Thousands of frustrated users subsequently lodged complaints on DownDetector as they were unable to access routine services.
DownDetector later stated that Cloudflare-related complaints, which had risen to nearly 5,000 at the height of the outage, had fallen to roughly 600 by 8am New York time. However, the platform noted that the real number of affected users might be higher, as its data relies on user-submitted reports and cannot capture the complete picture.
Cloudflare confirmed that it had detected “unusual traffic” affecting one of its services at approximately 6:20am. A company spokesperson explained that engineers immediately mobilised to stabilise the system and restore normal traffic flow. Initial improvements were reportedly visible within around twenty minutes, although the underlying cause of the surge in abnormal traffic remains under investigation.
In a statement, the spokesperson added that the company’s first priority was ensuring that all traffic could be served reliably. Once stability was restored, Cloudflare would focus on identifying the source of the incident. The event has raised fresh concerns about the vulnerability of global internet infrastructure when a single, heavily relied-upon provider experiences technical failure.
