A vegetable trader was injured in a knife attack during a mugging incident in Karwan Bazar, one of Dhaka’s busiest commercial hubs. The victim has been identified as Liton Mia, aged 45. The attack took place on Thursday night in front of the Amber Shah Jame Mosque.
Liton Mia, who lives with his family in the Kazipara area near Tejaturi Bazar, earns his livelihood by purchasing vegetables from Karwan Bazar and selling them on the pavements nearby. His wife, Yasmin Begum, told reporters that he had finished his day’s work when the incident occurred.
According to Yasmin, she received an alarming phone call late in the evening informing her that three muggers had surrounded her husband near the mosque. When he resisted, one of the assailants struck him on the head with a sharp weapon, causing a deep wound. The attackers then snatched 33,000 taka and his mobile phone before fleeing. Local people rushed to help and quickly transported him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment.
Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the Dhaka Medical College police camp, confirmed that Liton was receiving treatment at the hospital’s emergency department and that his condition was stable. When contacted at night, Tejgaon Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md Mobarak Hossain, stated that the police were gathering information and had begun preliminary inquiries.
This incident has raised renewed concerns about the safety of traders and labourers who work late into the night in the capital’s major markets. Many vendors say that inadequate police patrols, dimly lit streets and high cash-handling activities make them especially vulnerable to such crimes. Law enforcement officials have acknowledged the need for improved surveillance and increased patrols to ensure the safety of those who rely on these commercial areas for their livelihood.
