The Bangladesh national cricket team has received a significant boost ahead of their pivotal second One Day International (ODI) against New Zealand. Left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who was sidelined during the series opener due to a sudden injury, has been declared fit to return to action. This development comes as a relief for the hosts as they face a “must-win” scenario to keep the three-match series alive.
Before the commencement of the series, concerns regarding Mustafizur’s physical condition began to surface. Although he was initially named in the starting XI for the first ODI—with his name appearing on the official team sheet—he was forced to withdraw moments before the toss.
The injury occurred during the pre-match warm-up sessions when the bowler reported discomfort in his right knee. Upon being informed of the situation, Head Coach Phil Simmons consulted with the captain and the medical staff, ultimately deciding to exclude Mustafizur from the match to prevent further aggravation of the injury.
In a press conference held today, teammate and fellow pacer Shoriful Islam dismissed lingering doubts regarding Mustafizur’s availability for the upcoming match. Providing an update on the senior bowler’s recovery, Shoriful stated:
“Yes, he [Mustafizur] is quite healthy now, Alhamdulillah.”
Shoriful further emphasised that the entire 15-man squad remains prepared for selection, noting that the final decision rests with the coaching staff. “All 15 of us in the squad are ready to play. Now, the team will be decided by the coach and management. That is not in my hands,” he added.
New Zealand currently holds a 1-0 lead in the three-match series following their victory in the opening encounter. For the Bangladesh side, led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the second ODI represents a do-or-die situation. A loss in this fixture would result in a series defeat with one match still to play.

Mustafizur’s return is considered vital due to the specific conditions at the Mirpur circuit. Known for its slow and low nature, the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium often suits Mustafizur’s signature cutters and variations in pace. In a high-stakes match where the bowling unit must contain a formidable New Zealand batting line-up, his experience in the death overs provides the tactical depth that was arguably missing in the first game.
The Bangladesh squad is expected to undergo final evaluations on the morning of the match to ensure no recurring discomfort for Mustafizur. With the series on the line, the management is likely to field their strongest possible XI. The second ODI is scheduled to take place tomorrow, 20 April, in Mirpur, where the home side will look to level the series and force a decider.
