The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has successfully issued nearly 25,000 online usage permits (UPs) in the first two and a half months of 2026, according to a recently released press statement. This digital initiative has significantly facilitated the use of duty-free raw materials for industrial enterprises while accelerating import-export procedures and enhancing transparency across trade operations.

Automated Customs Bond System Enhances Efficiency

Since 1 January 2025, NBR has implemented an automated software system known as the Customs Bond Management System. This platform allows licensed bonded warehouse operators to obtain duty-free raw material usage permits online, reducing the necessity for physical visits to customs bond commissionerates.

The system is integrated with Bangladesh Bank’s online infrastructure, streamlining the verification process for import-export documentation. Starting 1 January 2026, all related services, including the issuance of usage permits, have been made mandatory under this automated framework. Currently, three customs bond commissionerates under NBR provide all permits online.

Online Permit Statistics

Between 1 January and 16 March 2026, a total of 24,963 online usage permits were issued. Compared with the same period last year, this represents a marked reduction in both time and cost for businesses.

Benefits and Coordinated Efforts

NBR officials highlighted that the service has enhanced operational efficiency for industrial beneficiaries. Coordination has been strengthened with Bangladesh Bank, the Duty Remission and Refund Directorate, and trade associations such as BGMEA and BKMEA, integrating their online systems for seamless workflow.

This digital shift has allowed industries to save substantial time and expenditure, promoting a more dynamic export sector and improving the overall investment climate.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, NBR aims to fully automate all related customs services, including bond auditing, to modernise administration, ensure transparency, and boost efficiency. Such measures are expected to make Bangladesh’s industrial and trade sectors more competitive and reliable on a global scale.

Ultimately, the online permit system represents a transformative step for domestic industries, positioning the country’s customs administration at the forefront of digital innovation and trade facilitation.
