The Inspector (Investigation) of Baghmara Police Station in Rajshahi, Kamalesh Das, has been withdrawn from his post and attached to the Rajshahi Police Lines following the circulation of a video on social media in which he is alleged to be seen receiving money.
The 52-second footage, which went viral on Sunday night, reportedly shows the officer seated in his office when an unidentified individual hands him an envelope. He is then seen placing the envelope under the table, removing cash, and counting several banknotes, including a number of one-thousand-taka notes, before placing the money into his wallet. He is later seen conversing and smiling with the person who handed over the envelope. At one point, he appears to show a red file or register lying on the desk.
The identity of the individual who handed over the money remains unknown, and his face is not visible in the video. Audio is also absent, leaving the conversation and context of the exchange unclear. As a result, the precise nature or purpose of the transaction cannot be independently verified from the footage alone, prompting calls for a formal investigation.
Authorities have confirmed that administrative action was taken promptly after the video began circulating widely on social media platforms. Kamalesh Das was withdrawn from Baghmara Police Station on Monday at around 11:00 a.m. and reassigned to the Rajshahi Police Lines pending inquiry.
According to available information, he had been serving at Baghmara Police Station’s investigation wing for approximately three months prior to the incident becoming public.
The video is believed to have first been uploaded on a Facebook page named “Kajim Babu” before spreading rapidly across multiple platforms, where it generated widespread discussion, criticism, and concern among users. Many commenters have called for a transparent investigation and disciplinary action if wrongdoing is established.
When asked for clarification, Kamalesh Das stated that he was unsure who recorded the video, when it was filmed, or how it was circulated. He also suggested that individuals sometimes provide payments related to ration or other official matters, although he did not offer a detailed explanation regarding the specific circumstances shown in the footage.
Rajshahi district police spokesperson and Additional Superintendent of Police Sabina Yasmin confirmed that the officer had been withdrawn from his post and attached to the police lines as part of standard administrative procedure. She added that an investigation has been initiated to verify the authenticity of the allegations, and appropriate departmental action will be taken based on the findings.
The incident has drawn attention to broader concerns regarding accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies. The outcome of the ongoing inquiry is expected to determine whether the video depicts misconduct or whether there is an alternative administrative or procedural explanation for the exchange shown.
