A tragic road accident on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway in Brahmanbaria’s Sarail upazila has claimed the lives of four people and left around 30 others injured after a passenger bus overturned and plunged into a roadside ditch.
The accident occurred at approximately 12:30 pm on Monday, 8 June, in the Baishamura area of Shahbazpur under Sarail upazila. According to police officials and eyewitnesses, the bus, operated by Diganta Paribahan, was travelling from Madhabpur towards Brahmanbaria when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The bus subsequently overturned and fell into a ditch beside the highway, causing extensive casualties among the passengers.
Local residents, passers-by and emergency responders rushed to the scene immediately after the crash. Rescue efforts began shortly afterwards, with injured passengers being pulled from the wreckage and transported to nearby hospitals and medical facilities for treatment. Several of the injured were reported to be in serious condition and were referred to higher-level healthcare centres for specialised care.
Authorities confirmed that four passengers died as a result of the accident. The deceased have been identified as Munshi Arsh Ali of Shahbazpur village in Sarail, a child named Alif, Mousumi Das of Paikpara in Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila, and Tanoy Kumar Majumdar, son of Setu Majumdar from Ibrahimpur village in Nabinagar upazila.

Witnesses stated that the bus appeared to lose stability before overturning. However, the exact cause of the crash has not yet been officially determined. Police are expected to investigate whether factors such as excessive speed, mechanical failure, road conditions or driver error contributed to the incident.
Road accidents remain a significant concern on the busy Dhaka–Sylhet Highway, one of Bangladesh’s most important transport corridors. The route carries thousands of passenger and freight vehicles daily, and traffic experts have frequently highlighted the need for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations, regular vehicle fitness inspections and improved driver training.
The incident was confirmed by Abu Taher Dewan, Officer-in-Charge of Khatihata Highway Police Station. He stated that law enforcement personnel attended the scene promptly and coordinated rescue operations alongside local residents. Further investigations are underway to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the accident.
The crash has cast a shadow over the local community, while authorities continue monitoring the condition of the injured and gathering information regarding the cause of the tragedy.
