One Man Killed Following Dispute Over Access Road

A 47-year-old man, identified as Dulal Hossain, has died after being subjected to a severe physical assault by opposing parties following a long-standing dispute over a residential access road in Lalmonirhat. The fatal incident occurred on the night of Saturday, 16 May 2026, in the Patgram Upazila of the district. Following the death of the victim, his wife, Runa Begum, formally initiated legal proceedings by filing a murder case at the Patgram Police Station, explicitly naming five individuals as defendants.

The late Dulal Hossain worked as an auto-rickshaw driver and resided in Bhandardah village, located within Ward No. 3 of the Patgram Municipality. His household was one of five families in the immediate vicinity whose livelihoods depend on operating low-income transport vehicles, including vans, pushcarts, and auto-rickshaws.

Origin and Escalation of the Land Dispute

According to the details recorded in the First Information Report (FIR) and confirmed by local residents, the conflict centered on an unpaved earthen road that serves as the sole transit route connecting the homes of these five families to the main thoroughfare. Because this unpaved path runs directly past the front of a residence owned by an individual named Mukul Hossain, he frequently blocked the route, asserting private ownership over the land. This recurring obstruction led to a prolonged and bitter dispute between the two parties.

Local community leaders and arbiters had previously convened multiple traditional dispute-resolution meetings (salish) in an attempt to settle the matter. However, these communal arbitration efforts failed to achieve a permanent resolution. The underlying animosity escalated significantly on the morning of Friday, 15 May 2026, when Mukul Hossain erected a bamboo fence across the dirt path, completely sealing off the transit route. This actions triggered a heated verbal altercation between Mukul Hossain and Dulal Hossain.

Retaliation, Assault, and Clinical Outcomes

In response to the road closure, a frustrated Dulal Hossain, accompanied by several affected neighbours, gathered at approximately 8:00 pm on Saturday night near the southern side of their residences. Using hoes, the group began digging up a brick-soled public road in the vicinity, creating deep trenches. Upon witnessing this retaliatory action, Mukul Hossain and his associates rushed to the scene and allegedly launched a severe, coordinated physical assault on Dulal Hossain, beating him indiscriminately.

Phase of Incident Event and Operational Details Institutional Action
15 May 2026 Mukul Hossain blocks the unpaved access road with a bamboo fence. Verbal altercations occur; no police presence.
16 May 2026 Dulal Hossain digs trenches; opposing faction launches physical assault. Local residents transport the unconscious victim to hospital.
16 May 2026 On-duty medical officer declares the victim dead upon arrival. Patgram Police recover body and initiate initial inquiry.
17 May 2026 Remains sent to district morgue; formal case filed by wife. Autopsy conducted at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.

Local residents quickly intervened, separating the attackers and rescuing the critically injured auto-rickshaw driver. They rushed him to the Patgram Upazila Health Complex for emergency medical treatment. However, upon arrival at the sub-district hospital, the on-duty medical officer conducted an evaluation and officially declared Dulal Hossain dead.

Police Intervention and Community Impact

Upon receiving notification of the fatality, a team from the Patgram Police Station arrived at the hospital on Saturday night to take custody of the body, which was then transferred to the police station. On Sunday, 17 May 2026, the authorities dispatched the remains to the morgue of the Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital to undergo a mandatory post-mortem examination.

The deceased was the father of three daughters and the sole wage earner for his immediate family, leaving his dependents entirely without financial support. Following the fatal confrontation, the principal accused individuals and their family members reportedly fled their homes and went into hiding to evade law enforcement operations.

Commenting on the structural history of the conflict, a local resident named Ibrahim Hossain stated:

“We earn our living by operating pushcarts. This road issue has been a problem for a very long time. Although local political leaders intervened previously to open the road, it was subsequently shut down again by the opposing party. Because our daily movement was completely blocked, we resorted to digging trenches in the front section of the road.”

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Patgram Police Station, Nazmul Haq, confirmed that police personnel visited the crime scene at approximately 9:30 pm on Saturday night to initiate a preliminary inquiry. Officer-in-Charge Haq emphasized that the body has been subjected to a formal autopsy to scientifically determine the exact physiological cause of death. He verified that the victim’s wife has filed a formal murder case and assured that the entire matter remains under active police investigation, with law enforcement teams tracking the absconding suspects.
