Pakistan Unveil Triple Debutants Amid Major Test Squad Overhaul

Pakistan’s test side presented a drastically altered lineup at Edgbaston, handing Test debuts to three players—fast bowlers Mohammad Imran and Razaullah, alongside wicketkeeper Gazi Ghori—while recalling Saim Ayub after an 18-month absence.

The widespread changes follow an unprecedented off-field purge following the previous Test at Lord’s. PCB management made the drastic decision to drop seven players from the travelling squad and fly them back to Pakistan. To fill the void, seven replacements were called up, five of whom arrived without a single cap to their name. The selection upheaval also claimed top-level coaching staff, with head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul both dismissed from their posts in the wake of internal discussions.

Despite the turbulent atmosphere surrounding the dressing room, captain Babar Azam remained steadfast at the toss, projecting confidence in his newly minted team.

“Outside noise and criticism are beyond our control,” Babar noted prior to the match. “This presents an invaluable opportunity for the younger players to step up and prove themselves at this level.”

The decision to bat first after losing the toss quickly ran into heavy weather. Saim Ayub’s long-awaited return to the international arena proved short-lived, as the opening batsman was dismissed for a duck. His wicket gave English paceman Ollie Robinson a milestone achievement, marking his 100th wicket in Test cricket.

Disaster struck again shortly after, as fellow opener Azaan Awais was removed for just nine runs after edging a sharp delivery from Jofra Archer. The early double blow placed immediate pressure on Pakistan’s mid-order to stabilize the innings against a relentless English bowling attack.

Pakistan XI Azaan Awais, Saim Ayub, Shan Masood, Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam (c), Saud Shakeel, Gazi Ghori (wk), Mohammad Ali, Razaullah, Mohammad Imran, Mohammad Abbas.
