An unusual and rare incident unfolded during the opening day of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), when the match ball unexpectedly changed colour from white to a deep maroon mid-innings, prompting confusion among players and officials.
The match, played on Thursday (26 March), featured the Lahore Qalandars and the Hyderabad Kingsmen. What was expected to be a routine high-profile opening encounter instead became a talking point for an unexpected equipment anomaly that briefly disrupted play.
During the first innings, players and match officials noticed that the white cricket ball began developing a faint maroon tint. The discolouration became increasingly visible before the completion of the powerplay, eventually becoming prominent enough to be clearly seen by the naked eye.
According to match reports, the issue intensified by the 15th over of Lahore Qalandars’ innings, at which point the umpires were forced to replace the ball. The cause of the discolouration was not immediately confirmed on the field, leading to confusion among both teams.
Hyderabad Kingsmen captain Marnus Labuschagne was among the first to raise concerns, reportedly approaching the umpires as early as the second over to request clarification and possible replacement of the ball due to its unusual appearance.
Subsequent reports, including those cited by ESPNcricinfo, suggested that the issue may have been caused by colour transfer from Hyderabad’s playing kit. The franchise’s maroon-coloured uniforms are believed to have potentially contributed to the staining of the white ball during play, particularly through repeated contact in fielding exchanges.
However, officials have not issued a definitive explanation, and the incident remains under informal review. Such occurrences are extremely rare in professional cricket, particularly in white-ball formats where equipment standards are strictly regulated.

Speaking after the match, Labuschagne expressed his surprise at the incident, stating that he had never previously encountered such a situation in professional cricket. He questioned the rapid change in the ball’s appearance and suggested that it was likely caused by external colour transfer.
“I said to the umpires, what is going on here? The ball has completely turned red,” he remarked. “It must have come from the clothing or something like that. I have never seen it before, although I have seen instances where ball colour has been affected by pads or bat contact.”
He further added that teams would be looking to ensure the issue was understood and resolved ahead of their next fixture.
Despite the on-field disruption, the match concluded with a comprehensive 69-run victory for Lahore Qalandars, who capitalised on strong batting and disciplined bowling to dominate proceedings.
However, the unexpected transformation of the match ball has become one of the most discussed incidents of the PSL’s opening day, raising questions about equipment interaction, kit manufacturing standards and match-ball durability in high-intensity conditions.
