Fog and Pollution Force India–South Africa T20 Abandonment

Published: 18 Dec 2025, 03:35 am

A much-anticipated contest between India and South Africa was washed out without a ball being bowled, as dense fog and hazardous air quality forced the abandonment of the fourth match of the five-game T20 International series in Lucknow. What was meant to be an evening of high-octane cricket instead turned into a prolonged wait, culminating in an inevitable decision by match officials to prioritise player safety.

The match had been scheduled to begin at 7:30pm Bangladesh time, but conditions at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium steadily deteriorated as dusk fell. Thick fog enveloped the ground, severely reducing visibility, while a blanket of toxic smog lingered over the city. After a first inspection around 8:00pm, umpires and officials continued to monitor the situation closely, hoping for an improvement that never arrived.

In total, the playing surface and outfield were inspected six times. Meetings were held at regular intervals—8:30pm, 9:00pm, 9:30pm and again shortly before 10:00pm—but each assessment delivered the same verdict: the conditions were unsafe. The fog only grew heavier, and visibility worsened to a point where conducting an international match was out of the question. At 9:55pm, officials formally abandoned the fixture, with no toss having taken place.

Air pollution proved to be an equally serious concern. Lucknow’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reportedly surged well beyond 400, a level widely classified as “severe” and extremely dangerous to health. Northern India has endured alarming pollution levels in recent weeks, and the impact is increasingly being felt in outdoor sports. During practice, India all-rounder Hardik Pandya was seen wearing a protective mask, underlining the seriousness of the situation.

Both teams curtailed their warm-up sessions between 7:45pm and 8:00pm before retreating to the pavilion to await the final call. Despite the organisers’ efforts to allow as much time as possible, the combination of fog and pollution left officials with little choice.

The abandonment has important implications for the series. With the match ruled a no-result, India remain unbeaten in the contest and hold a 2–1 lead heading into the final game. South Africa must now win the fifth and final T20 International in Ahmedabad to secure a drawn series, while an Indian victory would seal the series outright.
