Travel Insurance Growth Lags in Bangladesh

Despite the global surge in travel insurance, Bangladesh continues to lag in adopting this crucial safeguard for travellers. As tourism worldwide increasingly emphasises risk management, travel insurance has become an essential element of responsible travel. In Bangladesh, however, its availability and utilisation remain limited, mostly confined to outbound tourists.

Travel insurance provides financial protection against unexpected events, including medical emergencies, trip cancellations, flight delays, lost baggage, and personal liability. Such coverage enables travellers to travel with confidence, ensuring that unforeseen incidents do not result in significant financial loss or stress.

Globally, the travel insurance market has grown rapidly. In 2024, its estimated value reached around 27 billion US dollars, with projections indicating expansion to 60–65 billion US dollars by 2030. This growth has been driven by post-pandemic travel recovery, heightened risk awareness, and the increasing prevalence of digital platforms that simplify policy purchases and claims processing. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, tourism contributes roughly 10% to global GDP.

Typical travel insurance policies cover trip cancellations or interruptions, emergency medical and dental care, urgent evacuation, and repatriation. Additional benefits may include flight delays, lost luggage, accidental death, and personal liability coverage. Some policies also allow add-ons for adventure sports or pre-existing medical conditions.

Leading international insurers such as Allianz, AXA, AIG (Travel Guard), Generali, and World Nomads dominate the market, offering technology-driven services and fast claim settlements.

In contrast, Bangladesh’s overall insurance penetration remains below 0.5% of GDP—one of the lowest in Asia. Travel insurance is predominantly available for Bangladeshis travelling abroad, with very few options for inbound tourists. As a result, many foreign visitors rely on insurance from their home countries, which may not fully align with local healthcare or emergency response systems.

Bangladesh hosts popular destinations such as Cox’s Bazar, the Sundarbans, and Sylhet’s tea gardens, yet concerns over medical support, emergency assistance, and travel safety persist. Limited travel insurance coverage can negatively affect foreign tourists’ confidence and restrict high-value tourism. At present, tourism contributes roughly 3–4% to Bangladesh’s GDP, lower than many neighbouring countries.

Experts note that strengthening the travel insurance sector could enhance tourist confidence, attract premium visitors, and boost foreign currency earnings and employment. Initiatives such as partnerships with international insurers, digital insurance platforms, and bundling insurance with visas or tour packages could accelerate growth. Public awareness campaigns are also essential.

As global travellers increasingly prioritise risk management, travel insurance has become a cornerstone of sustainable tourism. With timely reforms and strategic investment, Bangladesh could unlock significant opportunities in this underdeveloped sector.
