Rain Likely Nationwide as Daytime Temperatures Edge Higher

Rain is expected to continue across Bangladesh despite a slight weakening in the influence of the seasonal monsoon, according to the latest forecast issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). While rainfall has become less widespread than in recent days, showers and thunderstorms remain likely in all eight divisions of the country. The weather agency also forecasts that daytime temperatures may rise slightly or remain nearly unchanged, while night-time temperatures are expected to fall marginally.

The forecast, released on Friday (31 July), indicates that many areas of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, Sylhet, Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions are likely to experience temporary gusty winds accompanied by light to moderate rain or thundershowers. Similar conditions are also expected in parts of Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions. Isolated locations across the country could receive moderately heavy to heavy rainfall, particularly where thunderclouds develop during the day.

Although the overall intensity of the monsoon has eased compared with previous days, weather conditions remain favourable for intermittent rainfall. Such fluctuations are common during Bangladesh’s monsoon season, when regional atmospheric conditions can produce scattered downpours even as the broader rainfall pattern weakens.

According to data from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the highest rainfall recorded in the country during the past 24 hours was 76 millimetres in Ramgati, Lakshmipur. During the same period, Dhaka received 10 millimetres of rainfall. However, no rainfall was recorded in the capital during the six hours leading up to Friday morning, suggesting a temporary break in precipitation despite the continued possibility of showers later in the day.

For Dhaka and its surrounding areas, the weather office forecasts partly cloudy to cloudy skies until at least midday. South or south-easterly winds are expected to blow at speeds of 8 to 12 kilometres per hour. Residents of the capital may also experience light rain or thundershowers in isolated areas as the day progresses.

Temperature readings show only minor changes. On Thursday, Dhaka recorded a maximum temperature of 30.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25 degrees Celsius. At 6:00 a.m. on Friday, the temperature in the capital stood at 26.4 degrees Celsius. The BMD expects daytime temperatures across the country to increase slightly or remain close to current levels, while night-time temperatures are likely to decline marginally, offering some relief after sunset.

The meteorological department also explained the broader weather pattern influencing Bangladesh. The extended axis of the monsoon trough currently stretches from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in India through the centre of a deep low-pressure system, across Odisha, West Bengal and the southern part of Bangladesh before extending into Assam. While the monsoon remains moderately active over Bangladesh, conditions over the northern Bay of Bengal are currently described as moderate.

As a result, weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled over the coming days, with periods of cloud cover and scattered rainfall continuing across much of the country. People living in areas prone to heavy showers are advised to remain aware of rapidly changing weather conditions, particularly during thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds.
