The passing of an individual can sometimes signal the end of an era. On 25 March 2025, Bangladesh mourned such a moment with the death of Sanjida Khatun, a luminous figure whose life profoundly shaped Bengali cultural identity. Her departure left behind a quiet yet enduring resonance, one that continues to echo in music, pedagogy, and the ethical values she championed.
To honour her life and work, a heartfelt commemorative event, “Gane Gane Shraddharghya” (Offering Respect Through Song), was held yesterday evening in the basement hall of Chhayanaut Cultural Centre, Dhaka. The gathering drew longtime collaborators, devoted students, and cultural enthusiasts, transforming the venue into a space brimming with affection, reverence, and collective memory.
Dr. Sarwar Ali, President of Chhayanaut, and Laisa Ahmad Lisa, General Secretary, were among the distinguished attendees. As participants shared their recollections, the hall seemed to vibrate with the presence of Khatun’s enduring influence. Though she is no longer physically among them, her melodies and teachings continue to reverberate across generations, reminding all of her indelible legacy.
The programme’s focal point was a series of fifteen musical performances, each echoing admiration, gratitude, and love. The following table highlights some of the key songs and their significance:
| Song Title | Significance |
|---|---|
| “Tomar Surer Dhara” | Celebrates the continuity of her musical influence |
| “Ganer Bhitor Diye” | Reflects her philosophy of life through music |
| “Gane Gane Tabo Bandhan” | Symbolises bonds forged through mentorship |
| “Ami Ki Bole Korib Nibedan” | An expression of heartfelt tribute |
In addition to the music, the event featured a group recitation, weaving a tapestry of collective memory and emotional resonance.
A distinctive feature of the evening was the restrained musical arrangement. Eschewing elaborate orchestration, performers relied solely on tanpura and mandira. This simplicity emphasised the purity of the voice, the depth of emotion, and the clarity of expression, rendering the homage both intimate and profoundly moving.
The ceremony concluded with the audio of Khatun’s own rendition of Rabindra Sangeet, “Jani Jani Go Din Jabe”. As her voice filled the hall, silence enveloped the audience. In that moment, it felt as if she was still present—in her music, her articulation, her teaching, and in the hearts of everyone who revered her.
Through song, memory, and devotion, the spirit of Sanjida Khatun endures, a guiding light in the continuing journey of Bengali culture and heritage.
