Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo is reportedly facing a severe mental health crisis that could see him leave the club. The trouble began even before the humiliating 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League, a match that left the Catalan giants reeling. In recent weeks, Araujo’s mistakes at the back had come under intense scrutiny, with mounting criticism piling pressure on the Uruguayan international. His red card against Chelsea only intensified the scrutiny, and after that match, Araujo was unable to continue without seeking a temporary break from football.
According to Spanish media outlet COPE, Araujo’s mental health issues are far more serious than initially understood. The 26-year-old’s struggles may prevent him from ever wearing the Barcelona jersey again. He had previously requested leave from the club for an indefinite period, citing overwhelming anxiety and emotional stress, particularly after the Champions League defeat to Chelsea. COPE reports that he has suffered recurring anxiety episodes since that match, prompting him to ask for a “temporary leave” to prioritise his mental well-being.
Journalist Juanma Castaño warned that the situation is graver than it appears, questioning whether Araujo will ever return to play for Barcelona. He described the defender’s condition as “delicate” and emphasised the unprecedented uncertainty surrounding his future, which has taken the club by surprise.
Despite the crisis, Barcelona has rallied behind Araujo. Club officials are aware of the intense emotional pressure he is under and have advised patience regarding his return. The priority is clear: mental health comes before football. The club has not yet announced any timeline for Araujo’s return, and if his absence extends over several weeks, Barcelona could consider reinforcing their defence during the winter transfer window.
Following the Chelsea defeat, Araujo faced widespread criticism on social media, with many blaming him for the heavy loss. Nevertheless, Barcelona president Joan Laporta publicly urged fans to support the player, reinforcing the club’s commitment to his recovery.
