In a shocking outbreak of violence in western Ecuador, seven people were fatally shot by armed assailants on Monday. According to the country’s police, the victims were first gathered and interrogated before the attackers opened fire with rifles and pistols. The news was reported from Quito by the AFP news agency.

The incident occurred on a farm in Manabí Province, a region frequently targeted by criminal gangs. Investigations indicate that the attackers disguised themselves as military personnel, a tactic increasingly used by organised crime groups in Ecuador. This ruse allows them to approach victims without raising immediate suspicion, heightening the terror in rural communities.

Such violent incidents are often linked to conflicts between international drug cartels and local trafficking networks, who are vying for territorial control. The struggle for dominance has resulted in escalating bloodshed across the country. Since January, a state of emergency has been declared in Manabí and eight other provinces as authorities attempt to curb the violence.

President Daniel Noboa has deployed the armed forces in an intensified anti-drug campaign. Yet, despite these measures, homicides have continued to rise. In 2025, Ecuador recorded a total of 9,216 violent deaths, marking a grim national record.

A breakdown of violent incidents in key provinces illustrates the widespread nature of the crisis:

Police confirmed that of the seven victims in Monday’s attack, six were men and one was a woman. Local authorities have intensified patrols and urged residents to remain vigilant. Community leaders have also appealed to the national government for enhanced protection and security measures in rural areas.

Analysts suggest that the ongoing violence reflects both the entrenchment of drug trafficking networks and the tactical sophistication of criminal gangs. President Noboa has pledged to implement stricter security measures and legal reforms aimed at reducing violent crime and dismantling illicit networks.

Human rights organisations, both domestic and international, have expressed grave concern over the attack. They have called for swift justice for the perpetrators and comprehensive strategies to address the underlying causes of the violence, particularly the influence of organised drug crime.

Meanwhile, local authorities in Manabí continue to conduct 24-hour patrols to maintain control and prevent further attacks, as the rural population remains on high alert.

The escalation of violence underscores the ongoing security challenges Ecuador faces in confronting organised crime, particularly in its rural provinces where law enforcement presence is limited.
