Six Arrested in Adabor Attack Case

Six individuals have been arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion-2 (Rapid Action Battalion-2) in connection with an attack on police officers in the Adabor area of the capital.

According to a WhatsApp message issued by RAB-2 on Wednesday, one of those arrested is Abu Sayeed, identified as the alleged “second-in-command” of the so-called ‘Kobjikata Anwar group’. The agency also stated that a detailed briefing on the arrests is scheduled to be held at 3:00 pm at the RAB media centre in Kawran Bazar.

Police and RAB officials said the incident began on Tuesday in the Shekhertek area of Adabor, where a mobile financial service agent was reportedly robbed. Following the robbery, police launched an operation to detain those involved. During the operation, the suspects allegedly attacked the police team, injuring two officers.

During the confrontation, the Officer-in-Charge of Adabor Police Station, Jahidul Islam, and Sub-Inspector Tarun were reportedly attacked with sharp weapons. Police responded by opening fire in self-defence, injuring two suspects. Four individuals, including the injured, were detained from the scene at that time.

Subsequently, RAB-2 conducted a separate operation and arrested six individuals, including Abu Sayeed. Authorities said they have obtained important information from the detainees, though further details are expected to be disclosed in the official briefing.

Alleged Criminal Group Background

Investigators have linked those involved to the ‘Kobjikata Anwar group’, a criminal network said to have been active for a prolonged period in the Mohammadpur–Adabor area of Dhaka Metropolitan Area.

According to law enforcement officials, the group was founded by Anwar Hossain, who faces multiple cases involving theft, robbery, extortion, drug trafficking, assault, and murder-related offences. He is reported to have more than a dozen cases filed against him.

Authorities further stated that members of the group gained notoriety for acts of extreme violence, including allegedly cutting off victims’ wrists and circulating videos on social media to spread fear. This practice reportedly led to the group being locally referred to as the ‘Kobjikata Anwar group’.

Although Anwar Hossain was arrested in February 2025 and sent to prison, officials said the network continued its activities. The group has since fragmented into smaller factions and is believed to still be involved in robbery, extortion, drug trafficking, and other criminal operations. Police also suspect that the organisation is now influenced by another faction known as the ‘Axel Babu’ group.

Crime Situation in Mohammadpur–Adabor

Law enforcement data indicates that the Mohammadpur–Adabor zone remains one of the most crime-prone areas under the jurisdiction of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. More than fifty criminal groups are reportedly active in the area, with at least seventeen major gangs regularly involved in robbery, extortion, land grabbing, drug trade, and hired violence.

Police estimates suggest that each group typically consists of 15 to 20 members, with illicit income largely derived from narcotics trade, street robbery, and extortion activities. Several prominent groups operating in the region include Patali group, Level High group, Daila group, Alex group, Gangchil group, Leo Thela group, Farhad group, Army Almagir group, Nabi group, and Akbar group, among others.

Authorities have intensified special operations in response to rising incidents of street crime and organised violence in the area. Investigations into the Adabor attack are ongoing, and efforts are continuing to identify and apprehend additional suspects linked to the incident.
