India faced a humiliating defeat on home soil as South Africa recorded a massive 408-run victory in the final Test at Guwahati, completing a series whitewash. India were bowled out for just 140 runs in their second innings, marking one of the most embarrassing days in Indian Test cricket history.
This is now the largest margin of defeat in terms of runs for India in Test cricket. Previously, in 2004, India lost to Australia in Nagpur by 342 runs. South Africa has now set a new record, surpassing that margin after 21 years.
On the fourth day, India needed to bat out 108 overs to avoid defeat, chasing an impossible target of 549 runs. However, they could last only 48 overs, losing eight wickets for just 113 runs. The defeat is a humiliating moment for Indian cricket fans.
In the first innings, Senuran Muthusami scored a century for South Africa, helping them post 489 runs. India collapsed to 201 runs under the bowling of Marco Jansen, whose short-pitched deliveries proved lethal. In the second innings, South Africa declared at 260, setting India an unattainable target.
India struggled throughout the final day. Simon Harmer took 6 wickets for just 37 runs in 23 overs, while Keshav Maharaj claimed 2 wickets. The only notable performance came from Ravindra Jadeja, who scored 54 off 87 balls.
A remarkable highlight was Aiden Markram taking 9 catches, setting a new record for most catches in a match by a non-wicketkeeper in Test cricket.
| Team | Matches | Wins | Losses | Points % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| South Africa | 4 | 3 | 1 | 66.67 |
| India | 9 | 4 | 5 | 54.17 |
This victory ended South Africa’s 25-year wait for a Test series win in India. For India, once a dominant force in home cricket, it was a painful lesson and a major humiliation.
