A joint law enforcement operation has led to the arrest of a 54-year-old man in Gaibandha, suspected of murdering a local farmer during the theft of a crucial agricultural irrigation transformer. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) apprehended the suspect, identified as Shahidul Islam, who is believed to be part of an organised criminal syndicate targeting essential agricultural infrastructure in the northern region of Bangladesh.
According to a press release issued on Wednesday afternoon by RAB-13, signed by Additional Superintendent of Police Biplob Kumar Goswami, the operation took place on Tuesday night. Acting on precise intelligence, elite forces raided the Jundah Bazar area in Palashbari upazila, Gaibandha, where they successfully detained the suspect. Shahidul Islam, a resident of the Purandar area in Gobindaganj upazila, is the son of Mofiz Uddin Sheikh. He has since been handed over to the local police station to face formal charges.
The tragic incident dates back to early May in Umarpur village, located within the Baro Alampur union of Pirganj upazila, Rangpur. The victim, Mofizar Rahman, was a dedicated local farmer who tended to a deep tube-well system installed by the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC). Because agricultural transformers are highly lucrative targets for thieves due to their valuable copper coils and specialized cooling oil, local communities frequently task individuals with guarding them overnight. Mofizar routinely slept inside the isolated pump house to protect the equipment from criminals.
On the morning of 7 May, the routine took a horrific turn. Neighbours noticed that the transformer was missing and immediately alerted Mofizar’s family. Upon rushing to the scene, family members found the wooden door of the pump house locked from the outside. When they forced their way in, they made a gruesome discovery. Mofizar’s bloodied body lay on the floor, his hands and feet bound tightly with rope. Investigators believe he was brutally murdered when he attempted to prevent the theft.
In rural Bangladesh, particularly across the fertile northern plains, the theft of electrical transformers is a persistent and growing menace. These devices, critical for powering the deep tube-well irrigation pumps that sustain paddy and vegetable cultivation, contain high-grade copper windings that fetch a high price on the black market. The loss of a single transformer does not just represent a financial blow to the state; it halts irrigation instantly, putting entire seasonal harvests at risk.
Consequently, impoverished farmers are forced to act as security guards, staying overnight in flimsy shacks in the middle of vast, pitch-black fields. This exposes them to immense danger from ruthless gangs. The murder of Mofizar Rahman highlights the terrifying security risks these rural workers face daily.
Following the tragedy, the victim’s brother, Monuar Hossain, filed a murder case against several unidentified perpetrators at the Pirganj Police Station. Recognizing the gravity of the crime, RAB initiated a shadow investigation, deploying intelligence networks to track down the culprits. After weeks of surveillance, investigators established Shahidul Islam’s involvement in the heist and subsequent homicide.
Authorities are now interrogating the suspect to uncover the wider network of buyers and accomplices involved in the illicit trade of stolen electrical equipment. Legal proceedings are currently underway as the community demands swift justice for the slain farmer.
