New Delhi, India – Tuesday: The Tangail sari weaving industry of Bangladesh has been officially inscribed on UNESCO’s heritage list under the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The announcement was made today at the 20th Intergovernmental Committee meeting of the convention, held in New Delhi. This registration marks Bangladesh’s sixth solo inscription under the convention and the second recognition in four years since the country’s election as a member of the committee.
Bangladesh’s permanent representative to UNESCO, Ambassador Khandakar M. Talha, who also serves as the President of the General Council, led the national delegation. He described the inscription as a “remarkable moment of pride for Bangladesh,” acknowledging the over two-century-long tradition of skilled craftsmanship in Tangail.
Ambassador Talha highlighted the cultural and social significance of Tangail saris, stating: “This heritage is inseparable from the daily lives of Bangladeshi women. Its international recognition not only celebrates the artistic excellence of Tangail weavers but also honours every artisan and woman who sustains this legacy.”
The Tangail sari has long been admired for its distinctive weaving patterns, fine cotton threads and durable craftsmanship. Originating in the Tangail district of central Bangladesh, the art form has evolved over generations, combining traditional techniques with contemporary styles. UNESCO recognition cements its status as an intangible cultural treasure and helps safeguard it for future generations.

The 20th session of the intergovernmental committee was inaugurated on 7 December by India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, with participation from UNESCO’s newly appointed Director-General Khaled El Enany. The meeting provided a platform for member states to share expertise, discuss safeguarding strategies, and honour newly inscribed cultural heritage elements.
The inscription of the Tangail sari weaving industry not only recognises Bangladesh’s rich artisan tradition but also strengthens the global cultural identity of the nation, highlighting the craftsmanship, creativity, and enduring legacy of its weavers.
