In a recent telephone conversation between the foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia, both officials reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties on matters of mutual interest, according to a statement issued by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

During the call, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian highlighted that recent unrest in Iran had initially stemmed from peaceful economic and labour protests. However, he argued that the situation escalated due to “the organised involvement of terrorist elements linked to Israel,” citing reports from Iran International and Al Jazeera.

The minister also emphasised Iran’s determination to protect its borders against any external threats. He criticised certain remarks by U.S. officials, describing them as provocative and interfering, and stressed that regional nations bear the responsibility of safeguarding stability and security against destabilising actions.

The discussion comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions, with reports of potential U.S. military action in response to Iran’s suppression of ongoing protests. In this context, Saudi Arabia informed Tehran that it would not permit its territory or airspace to be used in any attack against Iran.

Two senior sources within the Saudi government confirmed the communication to AFP on Wednesday, 14 January, according to Daily Sabah. The sources explained that the warning followed U.S. signals that it might take measures in response to Iran’s internal crackdown on demonstrators.

A close source within the Saudi military added: “Saudi Arabia has directly conveyed to Tehran that it will not participate in any military operations against Iran, nor will it allow the use of Saudi land or airspace for such purposes.” Another government insider confirmed that the message had indeed been delivered to Iranian authorities.

The conversation reflects a cautious but deliberate effort by both regional powers to manage tensions and maintain channels of communication amid a volatile geopolitical climate.
