Three-Month-Old Infant Killed in Mirpur

A three-month-old infant has died in a tragic incident in the Bardanbari area of Darus Salam, Mirpur, after being allegedly suffocated by his stepfather. Police confirmed that the accused, identified as Apurba, has been detained following intervention by local residents.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, 17 April. According to police statements, the infant was crying while lying beside his mother on a bed inside their home. The situation escalated when the stepfather, Apurba, allegedly became irritated by the continuous crying.

As described by Darus Salam Police Station Officer-in-Charge SM Zakaria, the accused reportedly instructed the child’s mother to stop the baby from crying, issuing a threat in the process. When the crying did not cease, he allegedly pressed the infant’s face, resulting in suffocation and the child’s death at the scene.

The mother’s screams alerted nearby residents, who rushed to the house and apprehended Apurba before handing him over to the police. Law enforcement officers subsequently arrived at the location, recovered the body, and initiated legal procedures.

The deceased infant was the son of Rajia Khatun, who has filed a murder case in connection with the incident. Police confirmed that the body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Investigators have also noted background information regarding the child’s biological father, who is currently in custody in a separate narcotics-related case. Authorities further stated that the mother had married Apurba only about a week prior to the incident, though the investigation into the circumstances is still ongoing.

Police have emphasised that the matter remains under active investigation, and further legal action will be taken based on forensic findings and witness statements.
