Three More Children Die as Measles Outbreak Continues Across Bangladesh

Three more children have succumbed to suspected measles symptoms in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, while 1,085 new infections were identified nationwide.

The latest figures were released on Saturday, 1 August, in an official press bulletin issued by the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Health officials reported 751 newly recorded suspected cases within the last day. Between 15 March and 1 August, the cumulative total of suspected measles cases across the country reached 128,310.

Laboratory testing confirmed 121 new infections in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed measles cases since 15 March to 16,180.

Hospital admissions continue to reflect the ongoing pressure on healthcare facilities. A total of 111,674 patients exhibiting suspected symptoms have been admitted to hospitals nationwide since 15 March. Of these, 107,367 patients have recovered and been discharged following treatment.

The death toll also continues to rise. The three latest fatalities bring the total number of deaths from suspected measles to 744 between 15 March and 1 August. While no deaths were officially confirmed from laboratory-verified cases in the last 24 hours, the total number of confirmed measles fatalities during the same period stands at 96.

Measles remains a highly contagious viral illness transmitted predominantly through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Young children, particularly those who are malnourished or unimmunised, face the highest risk of severe complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis, and fatal respiratory difficulties.

Early symptoms typically include high fever, runny nose, cough, and red eyes, followed several days later by a distinctive rash spreading across the body. Health authorities continue to urge parents to ensure their children receive routine Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccinations and seek prompt medical attention at local public health centres upon noticing early symptoms.
