Two Arrested in Rajbari Gang Rape Case

Rajbari, Bangladesh: Authorities in Pangsha, Rajbari, have arrested two men in connection with the gang rape of a 22-year-old woman, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The suspects were taken into custody under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act following a complaint lodged at Pangsha Police Station.

Sheikh Moinul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Pangsha Model Police Station, told Jugantor that the arrests were made on the night of 3 March, after the suspects were traced to Islampur in Dhamrai, Dhaka. The operation was led by investigating officer Md. Abdul Gani.

The arrestees have been identified as:

Akash Mondal (29), son of Mogbul Mondal, residing in Bagli village, Sarisha Union, Pangsha

Jamal Mondal (22), son of Arshed Mondal, also of Sarisha Union, Pangsha

Both men have extensive criminal records. Akash is linked to six prior cases, while Jamal faces four cases including arms possession and robbery. Following their arrest, both were sent to the Rajbari court to record their confessional statements.

Incident Details

The victim reportedly met a man named Sojal through the social media platform TikTok approximately seven months ago. According to police, she travelled to Bohaldanga village in Pangsha on the evening of 27 February, following Sojal’s directions. However, upon arrival, she could not locate Sojal.

Instead, she encountered Akash and Jamal Mondal, who allegedly deceived her by claiming they could arrange a marriage with Sojal. The two then allegedly forced her into sexual intercourse against her will. In addition to the sexual assault, the perpetrators stole 10,000 Bangladeshi Taka in cash and a pair of gold earrings from the victim before fleeing the scene.

The case has sparked significant concern in the local community, highlighting the persistent dangers of online interactions and the urgent need for vigilant protection measures for young women and girls. Police have emphasised that the investigation is ongoing, and further arrests cannot be ruled out.
