Two Infants Die as Measles Outbreak Escalates in Sylhet

Two more infants have died from measles-related complications while undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital within the last 24 hours. The deceased patients included a three-month-old infant and a ten-month-old child, according to official figures released on Saturday, 24 October 2026, by the Sylhet Divisional Health Directorate.
With these latest fatalities, the total death toll from measles and suspected measles symptoms across the Sylhet division has reached 202. The steady increase in fatalities highlights the severity of the ongoing public health challenge in the north-eastern region of Bangladesh.
Hospital admissions continue to rise rapidly alongside the death toll. Medical facilities across the division recorded 125 new admissions within a single day. Currently, 468 patients are receiving inpatient care across various healthcare centres in the division. Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital is managing the heaviest caseload with 200 patients, while Shahid Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital is caring for 168 individuals. The remaining patients are admitted across various upazila health complexes and district hospitals.
Since the start of the year, laboratory tests have officially confirmed measles infections in 1,115 individuals across the division. Health officials note that the actual number of clinical cases is likely higher, as many children in remote or rural areas present with symptoms without undergoing formal laboratory screening.
Medical professionals in the region report that infants under the age of one are particularly vulnerable to severe complications, including pneumonia, acute diarrhoea, and encephalitis. Malnutrition and gaps in routine childhood immunization coverage have further exacerbated the vulnerability of young children in rural communities.
In response to the surge in cases, divisional health authorities are working to bolster emergency medical care and expand immunization outreach programs to contain further transmission. Local public health officials have stressed the importance of timely vaccination and urged parents to bring children exhibiting fever, rash, or respiratory distress to medical centres immediately.
