Two Young Children Drown in Satkhira Village Pond

A profound tragedy has struck the Batkehali neighbourhood of Satkhira Sadar Upazila, where two young primary school students lost their lives in a drowning incident on Monday afternoon.

The victims have been identified as ten-year-old Habiba, a fourth-grade pupil and daughter of Habibur Rahman, and nine-year-old Labib, a third-grade student and son of Saddam Hossain. Both children were residents of the local Batkehali area.

According to local sources, the pair had gone together to bathe in a pond adjacent to the residence of Gafur Saheb at around 9:00 am. Concerns began to grow amongst family members as the morning wore on and neither child returned home, prompting an urgent search across the village.

The situation took a definitive turn at around 1:00 pm when a local resident arrived at the pond to bathe and noticed two pairs of sandals left unattended on the paved steps (pukurghat). Prompted by suspicion, the individual waded into the water to search the area and subsequently discovered the lifeless bodies of the two children beneath the surface.

Chief of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, Inspector Mahmudur Rahman, confirmed the fatalities, stating that law enforcement arrived promptly to handle the situation. The bodies were recovered from the scene, and arrangements were made to hand them over to their respective grieving families following the completion of necessary legal formalities.

Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death among children in rural Bangladesh, particularly during the warmer months when young pupils frequently gather near open water bodies without adult supervision. Local authorities and community leaders regularly stress the critical need for heightened parental vigilance around village ponds and rivers to prevent such devastating occurrences.
