UK to Announce New Sanctions Against Russia on February 24

Published: 23 Feb 2025, 12:04 pm

LONDON, Feb 23, 2025 (BSS/TASS) - The United Kingdom is set to impose a new and significant round of sanctions on Russia, Foreign Secretary David Lammy confirmed on February 23. The announcement will be made on February 24, marking the third anniversary of Russia's ongoing special military operation in Ukraine.

Lammy emphasized that these new sanctions will be the largest package of measures taken by the UK since the conflict began in 2022, aimed at further isolating Russia economically and diplomatically. The sanctions are expected to target various sectors of the Russian economy, including critical industries and key figures associated with the Kremlin, in an effort to intensify pressure on Russia to cease its military actions in Ukraine.

According to The Daily Telegraph, a UK government source revealed on February 22 that London had been preparing for the announcement, signaling a commitment to continue supporting Ukraine while holding Russia accountable for its actions. The new sanctions are anticipated to build on previous economic restrictions that have already had significant impacts on Russia’s economy, but have failed to deter the Kremlin from its military objectives.

As the conflict drags into its third year, international calls for a peaceful resolution to the war continue to grow. However, the UK remains resolute in its stance, aligning with European and NATO partners to maintain a united front in opposition to Russian aggression.

The fresh measures will come just days after similar moves by other Western nations, indicating an ongoing trend of heightened sanctions as diplomatic efforts to end the war show limited progress. These sanctions are also seen as a signal of continued solidarity with Ukraine and its people, who are suffering immense loss and displacement due to the conflict.

The full details of the sanctions package will be revealed during a formal announcement scheduled for February 24, marking another pivotal moment in the ongoing geopolitical standoff.
