A decorated veteran of Bangladesh’s Liberation War has died after drowning in Kurigram’s Chilmari upazila, bringing a tragic end to an accident that occurred in the village where he had spent much of his life.
The deceased, Mohammad Ali, 80, was a resident of Sarkarpara village under Romna Union in Chilmari upazila. According to local residents, the incident took place on Sunday afternoon, 12 July, when he accidentally fell into a body of water while walking along an embankment.
Witnesses said Mohammad Ali lost his footing as he was making his way across the embankment. He fell into the water below, prompting nearby residents to rush to his aid. Although he was quickly pulled from the water, he had already succumbed by the time he was rescued.
Local people noted that the elderly freedom fighter had been suffering from prolonged health complications, which may have left him physically vulnerable. While the exact circumstances surrounding the fall remain under investigation, there has been no immediate indication of any criminal involvement.
Police have confirmed the incident. Officer-in-Charge Nayan Kumar of Chilmari Model Police Station said officers had been dispatched to the scene to complete the necessary legal formalities. He added that an unnatural death (UD) case would be filed in accordance with standard procedure.
The death of Mohammad Ali has saddened residents of the area, many of whom remembered him not only as a respected elder but also as a veteran who had served the country during the 1971 Liberation War. Freedom fighters hold a revered place in Bangladesh’s national history for their contribution to the struggle for independence, and the passing of one of these veterans is often regarded as a significant loss to the local community.
Accidental drowning remains a recurring concern in many parts of Bangladesh, where rivers, canals, ponds and flood-prone areas are common features of the landscape. Elderly people and those with underlying health conditions can face heightened risks when travelling along embankments or near open water, particularly during the monsoon season when water levels are elevated and surfaces become slippery.
Authorities are expected to complete the legal process before releasing the body to the family. Local residents have expressed their condolences to Mohammad Ali’s relatives and joined in mourning the loss of a man whose life was marked by both his service to the nation and his longstanding presence in the community.
