A video showing Class 10 students dancing while holding what appear to be liquor bottles on their school grounds in Natore’s Baraigram upazila has circulated widely on social media, triggering widespread concern and criticism across the local community.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, 15 October, on the grounds of Chandai High School. In the video, which surfaced online on Saturday, approximately 40 to 50 male and female students are seen celebrating, dancing, and making merry on the school premises. During the festivities, three specific students—identified as Nirab, Yunus, and Mitu—were captured gesturing and dancing with liquor bottles in hand.
While the bottles contained a liquid resembling alcohol, local authorities have not yet verified whether the contents were genuine liquor or a substitute used for staging. Several students present were seen wearing white t-shirts inscribed with hand-written slogans, reminiscent of traditional university ‘Rag Day’ celebrations marking the end of an academic term.
Headmaster Obaidul Haq confirmed the occurrence, explaining that the event took place around 4:00 pm immediately after classes concluded on the final school day for the outgoing class. The school has 60 candidates registered for the upcoming 2026–27 Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations, comprising 21 boys and 39 girls. Mr Haq noted that while the pupils gathered to mark their departure, their conduct was wholly unacceptable. He added that he only became aware of the video after it went viral and pledged to call a meeting with the parents to decide on formal disciplinary measures.
Female students who attended the gathering admitted that holding liquor bottles on school grounds was a mistake, though they maintained they did not witness anyone consuming alcohol or know what liquid was inside the bottles.
Educational and administrative officials have reacted swiftly to the footage. Upazila Secondary Education Officer Salim Akhtar confirmed he had been briefed on the situation and immediately directed the headmaster to take strict administrative action. Expressing deep regret over the lapse in decorum, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Laila Jannatul Ferdous described the incident as deeply unfortunate for an educational institution and reiterated that the education office has been instructed to oversee a formal enquiry.
