World Cup Countdown: Messi Faces a Gruelling Run of 16 Matches Before June

Published: 24 Nov 2025, 05:53 pm

The 2026 World Cup is rapidly approaching, with less than seven months remaining. National teams, coaches, players and clubs have already begun shaping their plans. Inter Miami, competing in Major League Soccer in the United States, has released its full fixture list for the coming year, giving Lionel Messi a clear view of what lies ahead before he steps onto the world stage once more.

One of the most significant milestones for Miami in 2026 will be the official opening of Miami Freedom Park. The date is set for 4 April, when Miami will return home after five consecutive away fixtures and face Austin. The inaugural match at the new stadium is expected to be a landmark event for the club.

Another highlight awaits on 20 September, when Inter Miami will meet San Diego—the latest expansion team in MLS. Their addition brings new rivalry and anticipation, especially among West Coast supporters.

To accommodate continental tournaments and the World Cup, MLS has scheduled specific breaks. Between February and May, Inter Miami will compete in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. A global break for the World Cup will run from 11 June to 19 July.

April will be one of the most challenging months for the club. Miami will travel to Colorado on 18 April and to Utah on 22 April—two high-altitude venues where weather conditions often fluctuate and performances are frequently affected.

Meanwhile, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has begun finalising its own calendar ahead of the World Cup. Between 23 and 31 March, Argentina are expected to face Spain in the Finalissima, with Lusail Stadium being considered as the potential venue. Additionally, in early June, Argentina are likely to play one or two warm-up matches before their opening World Cup fixture on 11 June. The World Cup draw will take place on 5 December.

If Inter Miami manage to win their conference semi-final against Cincinnati, they will play in the Eastern Conference final on 29 November. Victory there would send them into the MLS Cup final on 6 December.

Excluding these possible additional fixtures, Messi is confirmed to play at least 16 matches before the World Cup—15 for Inter Miami and one for Argentina. The workload is demanding, and it underlines the intensity of the build-up for the Argentine captain as he targets a final World Cup appearance.
