In a shocking incident in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka upazila, a 36-year-old housewife, Rahima Khatun, was brutally murdered at her home in Gangatiapara village, Paragaon, Hovirbari Union. The crime occurred on Friday night, 6 February, around 10:30 PM, sending ripples of fear through the local community.

Rahima’s husband, Billal Hossain, who runs a wrapping materials business at Sidstore Market, was away at the time of the attack. Police have detained Rahima’s 17-year-old daughter, Somaiya Akter, for questioning in connection with the murder.

Local residents suggest that the killing may have been linked to a familial dispute over Somaiya’s romantic relationship, which Rahima reportedly did not approve of. According to neighbours, tensions had escalated in recent days, including an incident where Somaiya’s mobile phone was confiscated by her mother.

Incident Details

Eyewitness accounts and preliminary police statements indicate that on the night of the murder, Rahima and Somaiya had finished dinner and went to sleep in two separate rooms. Somaiya later reported hearing a sudden, mysterious noise, which she compared to the sound of a cat moving around inside the house. Moments later, she discovered her mother’s bedroom soaked in blood. Rahima, apparently trying to escape, fell from the veranda, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

Somaiya herself sustained injuries to her right hand, including cuts, which raised suspicion among investigators. Her statements were reportedly inconsistent, prompting the police to bring her in for questioning.

Investigation

The CID police have taken charge of the crime scene investigation, documenting evidence, taking photographs, and examining the body for signs of assault. Bhaluka Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Islam stated that the daughter’s testimony contained discrepancies, which warranted further inquiry. A CID team continues to work on reconstructing the events, and the precise motive for the killing is yet to be confirmed.
