The High Court has issued a rule questioning why the family of a person killed due to a dislodged metro rail bearing pad has not been awarded BDT 20 million in compensation. At the same time, the court has directed the formation of an expert committee to investigate the overall safety of the metro rail and the cause of the accident, with a report to be submitted within 30 days.
The order was delivered on Wednesday (29 October) by a High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Asif Hasan, following a preliminary hearing of the related writ petition.
Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun and Advocate Tanvir Ahmed appeared in court on behalf of the petitioners.
Earlier, a writ petition was filed seeking the formation of a committee to assess the quality of bearing pads used in the metro rail and all flyovers. The petition requested verification of whether the bearing pads met quality standards. Another petition sought BDT 20 million in compensation for the family of the young man who died after a metro rail bearing pad came loose.
The incident occurred in the Farmgate area of Dhaka on 26 October around 12:30 p.m., when Abul Kalam was killed after a bearing pad fell. The deceased’s home is in Ishorpati village, Naria Upazila, Shariatpur District.
