A violent confrontation occurred in Thakurgaon on Wednesday when two Baul musicians were attacked while preparing for a human chain demanding justice for previous assaults on Baul performers in Manikganj and the release of Abul Sarker. The incident took place at the city court premises during midday, local sources confirmed.
Eyewitnesses reported that the Baul artists had gathered under the banner “Unity for Harmony, Thakurgaon” to organise a peaceful protest. Around 1:30 pm, a group of approximately 40–50 youths, allegedly associated with the “Tawhidi Janta,” confronted two Baul musicians — Shamsul Chishti from Panchbibi, Joypurhat, and Mokles Pagla from Hothapara, Thakurgaon — and assaulted them before the demonstration could begin.
Thakurgaon Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge Sarwar Alam Khan noted that additional police had been stationed at the site, anticipating the human chain. Despite the precautionary measures, the musicians were physically attacked prior to the event. Authorities have instructed the injured Baul performers to submit formal written complaints, which will trigger legal proceedings against the perpetrators.
Rejwanul Haque, General Secretary of Udichi Shilpi Goshti, expressed concern over the attack, saying, “All citizens are entitled to express themselves peacefully. The assault on Baul artists is not only reprehensible but also undermines the cultural and artistic freedoms of our community.”
Analysts suggest that the incident underscores the ongoing threats faced by cultural practitioners in Bangladesh. It also highlights the intersection of cultural expression and local political dynamics, revealing how political intimidation can directly impact the freedom of artistic communities. The assault serves as a reminder of the urgent need to safeguard artists’ rights and ensure that peaceful cultural activism can continue without fear of violence.
