Barcelona are reportedly on the verge of securing one of Africa’s most exciting teenage footballers, as the Catalan giants accelerate negotiations to sign Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim from Al Ahly. The 17-year-old striker has become one of the continent’s most sought-after youth prospects following eye-catching performances both for his club and for Egypt’s Under-17 national team.
Sources from Spain indicate that Barcelona have already held multiple rounds of discussions with Al Ahly officials, with the Spanish publication Sport reporting that the club intends to finalise the transfer before the end of the calendar year. This proposed deal is expected to follow a loan-with-option-to-buy structure, allowing Barcelona to assess the young player within their system before committing to a permanent transfer.
Barcelona’s initial plan is to place Abdelkarim with Barça Atlètic, their reserve team, as early as January. The squad currently faces a shortage of forwards, making the teenager’s arrival particularly timely. Scouts from Barça were reportedly impressed during the recent FIFA Under-17 World Cup held in Qatar, where Abdelkarim’s dynamic movement, technical flair, and natural finishing instincts left a lasting impression.
Significantly, it appears that the player himself has played a pivotal role in pushing the deal forward. Once he learned of Barcelona’s interest, Abdelkarim is said to have halted all ongoing discussions with other clubs. Bayern Munich and AC Milan were both monitoring the youngster closely, but Barcelona’s project and philosophy proved too attractive for the Egyptian talent to resist.
His father has also stepped in, personally asking Al Ahly to allow his son to seize this opportunity. While Al Ahly are open to a loan arrangement, the club is insisting on financial guarantees, including a fixed fee, performance-based bonuses, and a future sell-on percentage. This structure mirrors the deal Barcelona executed when signing Pedri from Las Palmas — an agreement that has since proven immensely successful for all parties involved.
Another significant factor in securing the teenager’s commitment is Barcelona’s promise that Abdelkarim will be given a role in the senior team’s pre-season tour next summer. For the young striker and his family, this was the reassurance they needed to believe in Barcelona’s long-term plans.
Talent analysts describe Hamza Abdelkarim as a natural striker with impressive versatility. He is not only adept at scoring but is also capable of dropping deep to initiate build-up play, press aggressively, and form fluid link-ups with midfielders. His intelligence off the ball and ability to shield possession make him a standout among his age group.
Abdelkarim will turn 18 in January, eliminating any restrictions to his transfer. Should the deal proceed as planned, he could be wearing the iconic blaugrana colours before the winter window closes — a move that could signal Barcelona’s renewed commitment to discovering and nurturing global talents.
