Brazilian football icon Neymar Jr has undergone successful surgery on his left knee, marking a crucial step in his long road back to full fitness just six months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup enters its decisive preparation phase. The forward, who represents both Brazil and Santos, required an arthroscopic procedure to repair damage to the meniscus, an injury that had plagued him throughout the season.
Santos confirmed that the operation was carried out by the Brazilian national team’s trusted medical specialist — the same doctor who has overseen Neymar’s most serious injuries in recent years. Notably, this physician performed the surgery following Neymar’s fractured foot earlier in his career, as well as the major operation in 2023 after he suffered a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture. The continuity of care is viewed as a positive factor in his rehabilitation.
At 33, Neymar spent much of the season playing through persistent pain, a testament to both his commitment and resilience. Despite limited mobility and ongoing discomfort, his influence proved decisive during Santos’ most difficult moments. As the club battled to avoid relegation from Brazil’s top flight, Neymar rose to the occasion. In the final four matches of the campaign, he scored five vital goals, often while visibly struggling physically, helping Santos retain their place in the elite division.
This latest surgery has reignited hope that Neymar could still feature prominently in Brazil’s plans for the 2026 World Cup under head coach Carlo Ancelotti. While his absence from international football has stretched beyond two years due to injury setbacks, his experience, creativity and leadership remain invaluable assets for the Seleção.
Statistically, Neymar remains Brazil’s most prolific goalscorer of all time. His record speaks volumes, even as injuries have disrupted what might have been an even more extraordinary international career.

In January, Neymar made an emotional return to his boyhood club Santos after an ill-fated spell in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal. During more than a year in the Saudi Pro League, he managed just seven appearances, with the majority of his time spent in recovery and rehabilitation rather than on the pitch.
Neymar’s current contract with Santos is set to expire at the end of the year. The club has confirmed that discussions over a potential extension are ongoing, though any decision is likely to depend heavily on his recovery progress and physical condition in the coming months.
For now, all eyes remain on Neymar’s rehabilitation. If successful,
