A match that promised routine league football instead descended into a spectacle of goals, controversy and disciplinary chaos, as the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) Women’s League witnessed one of its most extraordinary fixtures of the season. On Sunday evening (4 January), at the Bir Shreshtha Shaheed Sipahi Mustafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur, Farashganj Club demolished Kacharipara by an astonishing 23–0 margin in a game overshadowed by on-field altercations and questions over competitive balance.
From the opening whistle, the gulf in quality between the two sides was unmistakable. Farashganj required just 38 seconds to open the scoring, immediately asserting their dominance. However, what unfolded was not merely a goal fest. By the 21st minute, the match took a dramatic turn when players from both teams became involved in a heated confrontation that escalated into physical clashes. The referee was forced to halt play as order broke down, prompting lengthy consultations with the match commissioner.
After several minutes of deliberation, the officials issued straight red cards to Farashganj’s Monika Chakma and Kacharipara’s Samia Akter. Play eventually resumed following an interruption of nearly 15 minutes. Yet the pause did little to curb Farashganj’s momentum. Within a minute of the restart, they found the net once again, continuing their relentless attacking display.
By half-time, the scoreline had reached 8–0. Goals before the interval came from Shamsunnahar Junior, captain Maria Manda, and Anamika Tripura, all of whom showcased superior pace, positioning and finishing. The second half proved even more punishing. Farashganj added a staggering 15 goals, turning the contest into a rout.
Shamsunnahar Junior and Maria Manda each recorded double hat-tricks, while Tahura Khatun also completed a hat-trick of her own. Shamsunnahar Senior contributed two goals, with Monika Chakma, Samiksha Ghimire, Anamika Tripura, Manuching Marma, Priti and Trisha each adding their names to the scoresheet.
The match, which kicked off at 8:00pm, concluded shortly after 10:00pm. The BFF released the official result close to midnight. While the federation has emphasised media engagement to promote the women’s league, journalists present once again raised concerns about inadequate facilities and limited access at the venue.
Beyond the scoreline, the match has reignited debate over the standard of domestic competition. With the AFC Women’s Asian Cup approaching, critics argue that such one-sided encounters do little to prepare national team players for elite international football. Similar criticisms were previously directed at high-scoring matches in Bhutan’s women’s league, making this result particularly uncomfortable for stakeholders.
Ultimately, this 23-goal encounter will be remembered not only for its numerical excess, but for the disorder, imbalance and structural questions it laid bare within Bangladesh’s women’s football.
