FIFA has released its latest world rankings, offering a detailed snapshot of the global football hierarchy. Leading the list is European champion Spain, followed by Argentina, the home of Lionel Messi, in second place. Five-time world champions Brazil occupy fifth place, while France, England, Portugal, and the Netherlands round out the top seven, positions that have remained unchanged since the previous ranking.
South Asian teams see little movement. Bangladesh retains its position at 180th, unchanged from the last update. Neighbouring India has climbed slightly, now ranking 141st, while Nepal lies two places below Bangladesh at 182nd. Other South Asian teams, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, remain at 194th and 199th respectively, highlighting the ongoing challenge for the region in making a mark on the global stage.
Recent continental tournaments have had a notable impact on rankings. The Africa Cup of Nations, in particular, has reshaped the standings of several African teams. Morocco, despite losing in the final to Senegal, has achieved its highest-ever FIFA ranking, rising three places to 8th. Senegal, meanwhile, advanced seven spots to reach 12th, marking their best position since April 1998, when the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists previously peaked at 10th.
Historically, Nigeria held the highest FIFA ranking among African nations, reaching 5th in 1994. Among Arab countries, Egypt achieved its top ranking in July 2010, reaching 9th. In the most recent tournament, Nigeria secured third place and now sits 26th in the rankings. Egypt, having reached the semi-finals, has climbed four places to 31st, while Algeria has dropped three places.
The table below summarises the current positions and notable movements of select nations:
