The Government of Bangladesh has announced key appointments within the personal secretariat of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, filling three senior positions including an Additional Press Secretary and two Private Secretary posts.
On Wednesday, 18 February, the Ministry of Public Administration issued three separate official notifications formalising these contract-based appointments. The appointees will assume their roles on the condition that they relinquish any professional, business, or employment affiliations with other government or private organisations.
According to the official notifications:
Atikur Rahman Rumon, a seasoned journalist, has been appointed as the Additional Press Secretary to the Prime Minister. He will receive remuneration and benefits at the final stage of the Grade-2 pay scale.
Md. Mehedul Islam has been assigned as Private Secretary-2 (PS-2), receiving the final stage salary of the Grade-4 pay scale.
Abdur Rahman Sani will serve as Assistant Private Secretary-2 (APS-2), with compensation aligned to the final stage of the Grade-6 pay scale.
These appointments will remain in effect until the end of the Prime Minister’s term or until her satisfaction, whichever occurs first. Additional terms and conditions of service will be detailed in formal contracts executed with the Government.
The appointments come on the same day that Abu Abdullah M Saleh assumed office as the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary, marking a significant restructuring within the Prime Minister’s communications team. The move underscores the administration’s focus on consolidating expertise in its media and executive offices.
| Position | Appointee | Pay Scale | Effective Terms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Additional Press Secretary | Atikur Rahman Rumon | Grade-2 (final step) | Until PM’s term ends or satisfaction |
| Private Secretary-2 (PS-2) | Md. Mehedul Islam | Grade-4 (final step) | Until PM’s term ends or satisfaction |
| Assistant Private Secretary-2 (APS-2) | Abdur Rahman Sani | Grade-6 (final step) | Until PM’s term ends or satisfaction |
These strategic appointments are expected to strengthen the Prime Minister’s office by ensuring experienced personnel oversee both administrative and press-related matters. Observers note that the inclusion of senior journalists and civil servants highlights the government’s emphasis on professional expertise in its high-level communications and secretarial operations.
