A potential explosion risk at a plastics manufacturing facility in Orange County, California, has prompted the evacuation of around 40,000 residents after a toxic gas leak was detected from a chemical storage tank.
The incident occurred at an aerospace plastics plant in the city of Garden Grove, located in Garden Grove. According to local authorities, a large storage tank at the site overheated, resulting in the release of hazardous gas. The tank is reported to contain between 6,000 and 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, a chemical widely used in the production of plastics and aircraft components.
Emergency officials warned that the situation remained unstable, with the risk of a possible rupture. Garden Grove Fire Department Chief Craig Covey stated: “This tank could rupture at any time, we do not know when it will happen. We are doing everything possible to bring the situation under control.”
As a precaution, evacuation orders were extended beyond Garden Grove to include parts of nearby Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster. Authorities said the priority was to prevent exposure to toxic fumes and reduce the risk to life in the event of an explosion or chemical release.
Although no injuries have been reported, officials have cautioned that a rupture could result in the chemical spreading into the surrounding environment or triggering a significant blast. Emergency response teams have been working to contain the hazard, including the construction of sandbag barriers designed to prevent contaminated runoff entering drains or waterways.
Health authorities have warned that exposure to methyl methacrylate vapours may cause respiratory irritation, eye discomfort, nausea, and headaches. Residents were advised to avoid the affected area and follow official evacuation instructions.
According to local officials, two affected tanks were identified at the facility. One has reportedly been brought under control, while the second remains in a highly unstable condition and continues to present a significant risk.
The sudden evacuation has caused widespread disruption, with many residents forced to leave their homes with only essential belongings. Some reported leaving within minutes of receiving emergency alerts.
One resident, Danny Pham, who lives a few blocks from the plant, said he was awakened around 7 a.m. when his roommate urged him to leave immediately. He had returned late the previous night after working at a Vietnamese restaurant and had not seen earlier warnings. He described taking only his wallet and passport before seeking shelter with a friend in a nearby city.
Garden Grove is situated approximately 38 miles (61 kilometres) south of central Los Angeles and less than a mile from the Disneyland resort area in Anaheim. The city is also known for having one of the largest Vietnamese-American communities in the United States.
