ICC Introduces New Guidelines Supporting Motherhood in Women’s Cricket

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has launched a comprehensive “Return to Play Post-Pregnancy Guideline” designed to offer female cricketers a safe, structured, and secure pathway back to professional sports following maternity leave. As women’s cricket transitions into a highly professionalised global sport, an increasing number of players are opting to start families mid-career. The newly unveiled framework serves as a vital resource for players, member boards, medical staff, and coaches worldwide, ensuring that pregnancy no longer signals an abrupt end to an athlete’s sporting journey.

Player health and well-being represent one of the ICC’s six core strategic priorities. Driven by the ongoing “100% Cricket” initiative, which promotes health awareness and open dialogue within the sport, this post-pregnancy framework introduces a structured, phased model known as the “6 Rs”.

The six distinct stages are detailed below:

  • Ready: Focuses on initial recovery and maternal well-being immediately after childbirth.

  • Review: Involves comprehensive medical assessments to gauge physical readiness.

  • Restore: Concentrates on early-stage rehabilitation, focusing on core and pelvic floor strength.

  • Recondition: Introduces progressive, cricket-specific fitness and conditioning programmes.

  • Return: Marks the gradual integration back into competitive match environments.

  • Refine: Provides ongoing monitoring and adjustments to optimise long-term performance.

Dr Philippa Inge, a member of the ICC Medical Advisory Committee and the team doctor for Cricket Australia, led the development of these guidelines. The framework tackles real-world logistical challenges by advocating for flexible training environments, access to specialised training facilities, and expert childcare advice. Critically, it outlines provisions for on-site crèche facilities, private breastfeeding areas at venues, and travel assistance to accommodate both mother and child during bilateral series and major tournaments. According to Dr Inge, the central message is that childbirth should be a chapter within a career, not the final page. She emphasised that individual member boards can adapt the flexible framework to suit local infrastructure while prioritizing personalised care.

The initiative has garnered strong support from West Indies cricketer Afy Fletcher. After giving birth in 2021, Fletcher successfully navigated her way back into international cricket and is actively participating in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2026. Reflecting on her personal experiences, Fletcher noted that while physical rehabilitation presented a major hurdle, the emotional toll of leaving her child behind to return to the field was far more challenging. She praised the ICC for establishing formal protections, noting that structured policies will help future players strike a healthier balance between family life and international duties.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah reiterated the governing body’s commitment to creating an inclusive global cricket ecosystem. Shah stated that a sustainable future for women’s cricket depends entirely on supporting athletes through every stage of their lives. The ultimate goal remains clear: no female cricketer should ever have to choose between the joy of motherhood and the pride of representing her country. This standardised framework aims to safeguard player welfare, retain world-class talent within the sport, and inspire a new generation of female athletes.
